Consider these sobering facts:

  • There are over 9700 unhoused in Santa Clara County.
  • We sorely lack enough shelter beds (there are only 1020 county wide.) Space for families, women and children, elderly and disabled are especially needed.
  • The coroner’s report shows a 105% increase in deaths of the unhoused in 2016, with most of these due to exposure.

We help communities work together in coordinating:

    ~overnight shelters    ~meals            ~monetary & in-kind donations

    ~safe car parks            ~volunteers    ~daytime warming shelters

HISTORIC SHELTER VOTE! Tues. Aug. 8 2017 at 4pm. San Jose City Council Chamber. City Hall. 200 E. Santa Clara St. San Jose.

We need a good turnout to ensure a historic new incidental shelter ordinance overwhelmingly passes SJ city council! This streamlined ordinance would allow for shelter in ALL places of assembly (community centers, libraries, gymnasiums, faith communities, etc.) for up to 365 days/yr. for up to 50 people. NO OTHER CITY IN THE NATION HAS SUCH A ROBUST A LAW and would be a game-changer for San Jose to shelter the 4350 unhoused that live here. (74% are unsheltered in SJ- one of the highest % in the country.)
This proposal comes after the Winter Faith Collaborative, an interfaith movement, engaged over 75 faith communities to shelter and volunteer in places of worship in San Jose. We have served a total of 700 individuals in our first 2 years. Think of how many more the community could serve if shelter was allowed in even more sites!
Please come and speak in support of this important policy and please invite your friends! (You can find us by finding the yellow “Housing for All” signs…. As most council meetings go, we don’t know when exactly our item- 4.3- will come up. But it will NOT be before 4pm. Please know that there may be a wait which is why event is listed to 8pm. It could end before that.)
